When Union spies steal an engineer's beloved locomotive, he pursues it single-handedly and straight through enemy lines. 1862, Georgia, USA. The American Civil War is in its second year and Johnnie Gray is barred from enlisting. He is a train engineer and the Confederate Army feel he is more valuable to the Southern cause in his current role than in the army. This frustrates Johnnie and has estranged him from his sweetheart Annabelle, who views him as a coward. Then his beloved engine, The General, is stolen by Union spies and is heading for Union lines. Moreover, Annabelle is on board. Johnnie sets off after the two loves of his life. The General contains every ingredient necessary for a quality film. Buster Keaton's The General is an action packed comedy about an train Engineer in the south during the civil war that decides to take on an entire army by himself. his drive towards this brash decision comes from the pain of rejection not only from the Southern army but also his girl friend for not being accepted by the army. The movie is filled with slapstick gags that you cant help but laugh at. i wish there could have been more dialogue written to get a more detailed look at what was going on in his head and around. I found myself confused at times and would have to guess on the plot line. Everyone loves a story with a happy ending right? this one has it. By unexpectedly overhearing the northern army's plans, the main character is able to warn the south of the attack and returned a hero. He was awarded for his noble efforts with the chance to enlist in the southern army and get the girl. I have watched a few Chaplin films but up until The General I hadn't been exposed to the genius that also was Buster Keaton. He used a similar style to Charlie Chaplin in that he uses slapstick humor but at the same time brings a great deal of heart to the films as well. The General takes a little bit to get going but when it finally does it's quite the entertaining flick.

Keaton, although not as silly as Chaplin does employ a similar style of humor. Many flops and accidental trips occur throughout the film and for it being almost a 100 year old film I still found it funny. But a silent film cant be great without an equally entertaining score. And unlike Chaplin's films you don't have to read as many scene explanations. Most of the story is told by the absurd but equally hilarious action on screen. Film at that time was made purely to entertain and this film does just that. Keaton treats us with one of the most fun scenes of all time with the iconic train scene. Every time Keaton fell down or did something outright stupid was just as funny as the last.

The subject matter doesn't really matter with this one. Even with it being a meaningful movie about the civil war, it almost pokes fun at the whole situation just as Dr. Strangelove did. And in the end you flat out cheer when Keaton's character gets the recognition that he deserves. Although I will always lean more towards Chaplin's films, The General entertains with the best of them and is one of the all-time classics.

+Iconic train chase, pure entertainment

+Keaton is full of laughs

+Even with it being nearly 100 years old

+Short and to the point..

-..Just a bit of a slow start

8.8/10
